Mental Tip: Leading with Intentionality over Automaticity
What does practicing intentionality over automaticity mean?
In this context, automaticity refers to mentally “checking out” and going through the motions without conscious, effortful thoughts during a ride. Intentionality in this space refers to paying close attention to specific aspects of the ride, remaining “in the moment”, and making conscious decisions along the way. Automaticity feels like second nature, requiring less mental energy. Intentionality feels effortful and requires a consistent focus to properly engage. It’s the difference between mindlessly reacting versus mindfully responding.
Why is intentionality important for riding?
Intentionality is the driving force behind positive habits, well thought-out responses, and desired outcomes. When we let our brains run on autopilot, the brain works to achieve its’ own goals rather than YOUR goals. These primitive goals of the brain involve keeping us safe and away from any type of threats, thus living to see another day. If we listened to our brains, we for sure would not be climbing on the back of a 1,000 pound animal with a mind of its’ own! Instead, we need to work to think, feel, and take action intentionally so that we create our own destinies and unlock our best in the saddle and beyond. Why rush through a sticky situation under saddle when you have the power to pause, think, and properly respond? Both you and your horse will thank you for intentionally riding rather than riding on autopilot mode!
How is intentionality achieved?
The best and most accessible way to do practice intentionality is to engage in daily check-ins. Start once a day; notice where your thoughts, feelings, and focus lie in that very moment. Once this becomes routine, check in with yourself once before your ride and once during your ride. By engaging in these check-ins, your focus is brought to the present moment, where intentionality lies. You’re then able to be intentional with your thoughts, feelings, and actions in each passing moment. As a result, you’re able to ride with true intention and strive towards your goals with a set plan. Additionally, you’re able to control the situation and your rides instead of allowing the situation and your rides to control you. We may not be able to control our first, initial thought produced by the brain, but we CAN control and choose our following thoughts. Practice the power of intentionality in your rides, and see what it brings you!
