Mental Tip: Developing Pre-Ride Routines

What does having a pre-ride routine mean?

In this context, a pre-ride routine is a specific set of actions done in the same order before both mounting and riding the horse. Pre-ride routines are essentially pre-performance routines for riders. Instead of mindlessly going through the motions and getting the ride over with, riders who engage in a pre-ride routine intentionally prepare for what’s to come in their upcoming ride. They build their routine in a manner that sets them up for success. Each skill and action is tactfully chosen and placed in a strategic order. Pre-ride routines are based on each individual rider and their needs. Routines can look very similar or vastly different depending on the individual rider, their discipline, their optimal energy level, and the needs of their horse.

Why is a pre-ride routine important for riding?

Pre-ride routines are important because they set each ride up for success, no matter the horse, the environment, the rider’s current mindset, or any external factors. A mental routine allows the rider to both effectively prepare for their upcoming ride and intentionally place their mind where it needs to be in order to promote a successful ride. Pre-ride routines allow the rider to fully check in to their current state, engage in intentional work to purposefully place their minds on relevant cues, and fully tune in with their horses. Pre-ride routines also bring a sense of familiarity to unfamiliar environments and assist riders in transferring their skills from a lesson at home to a brand new horse show. Pre-performance routines are used across all sports and allow athletes to effectively prepare for what’s to come and set themselves up accordingly.

How do I develop my pre-ride routine?

The best and most accessible way to develop a pre-ride routine is to both recognize the actions that work best for you and utilize the skills that you already have developed. Think about if you want your energy level to be calm or high, for example, and pick specific tools that promote your desired outcome. Oftentimes, we don’t have all the mental tools to support our ideal mental state, and that is where the mental skills come into play. Use what you have, but also recognize that there is room for growth, especially if you are unable to properly set yourself up for any ride in any environment. Self-awareness is the first step towards change, so first notice what you need, then try out some skills you already have under your belt, and then your routine will be finessed over time and repetition. All in all, practice and foster the skills that work best for you as you find their order and engage with them before each ride.
